RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL BY JEANNE GARAUDE

jeanne garaude

This week the talented and bubbly founder of Chá Iracema, Jeanne Garaude is taking you for a 24h on her land in Brazil and more precisely in Rio de Janeiro.

A ray of sunlight tickles my face, I open my eyes, it’s 7am ! I usually sleep in total darkness, but not here, I don’t want to miss anything !! I get up and go on the balcony, a beautiful shining sun, the sea, what a breathtaking view, with a smile I breathe in deeply and murmur Bom dia Rio meu amor !!!

Quietly I put on my lightest outfit and head down to the beach to post 10 where Rodrigo, smiling as always, awaits me with the freshest coconut which he opens in front of me and hands over !

Not another person in sight, I’m so happy, the beach belongs to me !

I walk down to the water and sit watching the horizon, taking sips of the sweet coconut water, contemplating, I stay there enjoying every moment! I dip my feet in the water, too cold for me! I will come back later…

My watch tells me that it is already 9am, I head to the Botanic garden, a haven of peace where I go as much as possible, after a rejuvenating walk I meet a childhood friend for breakfast at the Bicyclette. I love going there, few people know about this little spot hidden at the entrance of the garden, a sweet mix between a French breakfast and Brazilian morning delicacies.

It’s now time to go to Leblon, to go up to Vidigal where I’m going to visit friends. This place is really special, just a few steps from the beach, it has one of the most beautiful views of Rio overlooking Ipanema.

After an hour spent with my friends, I go back down the favela, slowly, to Ipanema, where I have an appointment for a dive and an Iced Maté drink on the beach (an industrial version unrelated to the Chá Iracema proposed by the street sellers but with a zest of lemon which makes all the difference).

It is tempting to laze around all day in the water but the maté kick fills me with so much energy and the hunger pangs begin! So we get up and set off !

The swimsuit still wet and my hair wrapped in a towel I head to the Zaza, one of my favorite terraces in Ipanema !

Seated at a small table under a magnificent tree, we order, freshly fished oysters and wonderful shrimp with a nice quinoa salad, two mate-based cocktails (natural and refreshing).

Time goes by so fast, it’s already time for Tennis at the Copacabana Palace, we leave and arrive just in time to the purple court, my grandfather was a regular at this place for his business meetings and his children and grandchildren have the right to use the facilities to date.

It is difficult to play for long under the Brazilian sun, and after some time we give up and head to the pool and dive in immediately and hangout there until sunset. It is time to go home to shower and change for cocktails and dinner.

Tonight we dine in one of my favorite restaurants, the Antiquarius and I’m over excited. It was opened in the 70s by Carlos, the owner, a Portuguese man who fell in love with Brazil, which in addition to finding everything vintage or from flea markets, hence the restaurant’s name (we can leave with a wonderful table after dinner) proposes an elegant team and exceptional service, the atmosphere is fantastic and the bar at the entrance is divine, a perfect start to a beautiful evening, not to mention the aesthetics of the location and the excellent cuisine !

In short it is just fabulous and once again we are impressed !

We jump into a uber heading to Rocinha, one of the best baile funk spots for tonight, the evening passes by fast, what a delight, I move closer to the view, the sun is rising and without a warning, it is 7am again….

I want to stay in Rio forever !
