The talented duet Julia and Naoyo behind the lovely brand Bananatime, perfect crossroads between luxury and lounging, are taking you for a 24h in their city, Amsterdam. Enjoy!
There is something for everyone in the city of Amsterdam. If you want a quiet day or want to be apart of the buzz you can choose. The only thing that is a necessity is to have a bike. The city shrinks with a bike. Your bike becomes your best friend and you should never leave home without your best friend.
Weekends are precious lazy days. Sleeping in on Saturdays is a great guilty pleasure to enjoy. Around 10:00am, it’s still a good time to head out and grab a quick coffee at Toki before heading to Noordermarkt. This square is where Westerstraat meet Prinsengracht in the area of Jordaan. On Saturdays, you can find a wonderful organic farmers market. After picking up some fruit for the week, one can’t help but do a quick scan of the other stands at the market where you can search for hidden treasures of crafts, books, and textiles.
Heading east of the city on the bike, it’s a perfect area for taking a quick lunch especially if you have a craving for some Asian food. There are plenty of places to choose from in the Zeedijk area, but two local favourites for noodles are New King or Thai Bird Snackbar.
After lunch, only a 10 minutes bike ride away is the amazing Hortus Botanicus. This is such a beautiful peaceful place in Amsterdam. Even on the rainiest, coldest days in Amsterdam, you feel like you’re in another country once you enter the green houses full of ancient cacti and tropical plants. A favourite green house if you are ok with flying insects, is the magical butterfly green house. After discovering a few new plants and finding back some Zen, a coffee can be had at the café inside the botanical gardens.
Heading back on the bike to the Jordaan area to have dinner at a wonderful pizzeria called La Perla. Across the street they have their stone oven and take away, where you can also eat in if you can find a place at the window. It’s always busy, so good to make a reservation in advance.
Just in time to catch a movie at The Movies. This is one of the oldest theatres in the city with great art deco interior that always has some great alternative and independent films showing. It’s also possible to have a drink or take a meal at the theatre, which helps simplify your planning.
Last stop of the night for one last cheeky drink at Vesper Bar. It’s a cosy, local bar in Jordaan that makes delicious cocktails. It’s the perfect way to end your Saturday and start your Sunday.
