Capri, the legendary Italian island of enormous natural beauty, will bedazzle you as it has already done with its prestigious guests, such as Grace Kelly and Jean Cocteau.
We go there in search of the dolce vita, and to discover the glory of the past. Sometimes, stifled by mass tourism, the secret is to stay there for the night and watch all the visitors rush into the boats heading back to the Bay of Naples. Once the frenzied visitors have left, you will find peace and the feeling of being a true local.
10am- We start the day on the Piazzetta, although this is by far the most touristic spot on the island, it is good to mix the two worlds. If you arrive in the morning from the port, we recommend that you take the taxis particular to Capri. It is true that the bill may seem expensive, but the drive is worth the detour and you’ll feel like a part of life in Capri in no time.
Once you’ve reached the peak, take the time to enjoy the Italian hour over coffee and maybe pastries at Da Alberto. The ice-creams there are succulent, and great for a sweet and refreshing break in the afternoon.
11am- We offer you an escape from the horde of tourists to the east of the island where you can get lost in the maze of trails along the cliffs of Capri. There you can often find yourself alone in the middle of the vegetation, an opulent, majestic and olfactory journey all in itself. At the bend of a path you will come across hidden houses of extraordinary beauty, a small garden with a chapel and incredible views of the Mediterranean Sea and its rocks.
Do not miss the Villa Malaparte, famous for hosting the filming of « Mépris » by Jean-Luc Godard with Brigitte Bardot and Michel Piccoli. While impossible to visit, this walk is a great way to discover the Villa, a very ochre red and made of geometric lines, it offers you the view of a provocative and solitary edifice.
Do not forget a good sunscreen and a large bottle of water, even during off season the sun is definitely there!
1pm- Certainly tired, drunk from the heat but with stars in your eyes, we suggest you make a stop to replenish and recharge. Back near the Piazzetta, for a lunch to be seen or do some people watching at Aurora, a legendary pizzeria, everyone who is anyone has been there including Queen B and Giorgio Armani! The flip side, a lot of waiting but given the extent of the cellar, you will find something to quench your thirst while you wait.
For those who want a quieter experience, head towards E’Divino, a charming mix which reveals its charm once you are in their garden. However, to have any luck with the menu, you must order the stuffed zucchini flower fritters! We still dream about them here at Far and Wide.
2pm- Several options are available to you, the beautiful Capri offers a myriad of opportunities.
If you are seasick, but want to laze and sunbathe, there is no sandy beach here, but chairs by the edges of cliffs, so we suggest that you set yourself up at the coolest beach club on the island, The Fontelina, the way to get there is not particularly short, but the walk is worth the little side trip to the Marina Piccola .
For those who love the sea but also a great opportunity to go and discover from up close the beautiful caves of the island, we suggest you take a boat from the large marina, there are group excursions for a tour of the island from the port but we advise you to rent a private boat and avoid ending up with hordes of tourists since your skipper will stop for you wherever you want.
Capri Relax Boat will convince you , the must do is a tour of the caves at your own pace, the Blue cave, the Green cave, the Emerald Cave and even take a moment to enjoy a nap to the sound of the waves lulled by the gentle rocking of your boat. You will be entitled to the traditional trip to the faraglioni : 3 stacks located south of the island, when passing under the arch couples must kiss. So romantic !
For those who arent fans of relaxing even while on vacation, head to Anacapri, by bus for the folksy experience or by taxis for the agoraphobes. There, it is essential to take the time to visit the Villa San Michele di Axel Munthe built on the ruins of a Roman villa and its beautiful gardens overlooking Capri. Then continue with a visit to the Casa Rossa, a beautiful Moroccan-style villa , which contains a collection of paintings of the nineteenth century.
We saved the best for last, climb to the highest point of the island with the Seggio -via del Monte Solaro chair lift, the 12min ride is an adventure in itself and the view is exceptional . On good weather days we can see the Amalfi coast, the Bay of Naples and the islands of Ischia and Procida. Enjoy the view with a drink.
6pm- Time to relax and take a little shopping break, here you will find of course all the big brands on Via Camerelle but we prefer to take you to a more local shopping experience. Let’s imitate Jacky Kennedy and get ourselves a pair of Made in Capri sandals in the mythical Canfora shop, she even has a model named after her « The K Model ». Next head out to the Carthusia shop, a legendary perfumery.
And for those seeking the best Limoncello from Italy, an appointment with Limoncelli di Capri, rumor has it that the grandmother of the owner proposed it to her clients as a digestive and hence it would have been invented in Capri . Legend or reality, this does not diminish the charm and the quality of products sold at this property.
8pm- We continue in the footsteps of the legendary Capri and its equally legendary guests for an aperitif at Jacky Bar, in the Tiberio Palace, a patio bar with a jazzy 60s style atmosphere. A great white piano, borsalinos hanging on the wall and a bar that surrounds a tree inside. The view of the sunset is very nice and you can discreetly people watch from there.
9pm- Dine at Il Geranio, an elegant restaurant where you will be served excellent Mediterranean cuisine. We go there for the splendid view, the enchanting setting among pine trees and the quiet and romantic atmosphere. Dine by candlelight to the sound of soft music and let yourself be surrounded by the sea breeze. A unique experience. Reservations recommended.
